Why File,Folder and Share Encryption?
Why not disk or volume level encryption?
Disk and volume level encryption has it’s place. If an organisation has a number of employees who are constantly on the move, then disk level encryption is very useful. But it is limited to protecting data if you lose your device. that is to say, if you leave your storage in a taxi, or a cafe, or have it stolen, then chances are, your data is safe. It does NOT help for malicious or accidental insider threats, advanced persistent threats, malware, and is certainly not helpful for cloud based data.
Why File/Folder/Share level encryption?
Not all data is equal and not all users are either. File level encryption allows an organisation to implement tight controls on what data is encrypted and who has access to it. Access can be based on sensitivity, need, authority, or whatever the organisation deems appropriate. It is generally transparent to the end user. It certainly helps mitigate the risk of ransomware gangs exfiltrating data and using it to extort the victim(s).
Good file level encryption solutions help organisations reduce the risk
- ransomware and exfiltration of data
- accidental disclosure of sensitive data,
- insider threats
- malicious actors
- advanced persistent threats.
It also protects both unstructured and structured data, implements the restriction of administrative privilege to sensitive data and helps organisations address areas of a compliance and regulatory nature such as CPS 234, PCI DSS, PDPA and many more.
The difficulty for organisations is making that process easy. SmartEncrypt solves that problem too.
